Dominica in December

Our decision to go to Dominica was based on the fact that you can swim with Sperm Whales. Unfortunately , We didn't plan on Makaela getting seas sick, and then getting regular sick, and then getting a heat rash all at the same time. Needless to say she was rather miserable for the first week.

Once she felt better we took a guided tour to water falls and to see the island. Unfortunately there was major flooding all around the island and some of the roads to get to the waterfalls were closed due to mudslides.

Luckily we were able to reschedule and had a wonderful time with our guide.

The last day of our time in Dominica Makaela finally went to swim with the Sperm Whales. We saw 2 a mother and calf right away. Sadly they were caught in a drift line net that had wrapped around the mother's tail and then wrapped around the calves jaw and had broken it. I aske the guide if they had ever seen anything like this before, and luckily he said no. This was our first dive and after that we waited until the researchers could come out and cut the thick rope from them. Sadly due to the way the calves jaw was broken, we don't think the calf made it.

Certainly this was an adventure... Not one I ever want to repeat,  but hopefully Makaela and I will have another opportunity to swim with Sperm Whales.

After this terrible experience, we didn't have any interest in staying on Dominica any longer, so we sailed south the Martinique.
