BVI's Charters & FOMO

I noticed that in the BVI's there is a lot of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) going on with all the Charter Boats and Charter Captains. People have high expectations as they've spent a lot of money on a charter boat, and they have a very limited time to enjoy this "DREAM" Vacation.

In the BVI's the most popular anchorages have mooring balls. They have Yellow balls called Boaty Balls, that are set by reservation only at $55 per day. You have to go on their website and try and get a ball exactly at 7am. It's set up much like goverment campgrounds in the United States were you have to hit the botton exactly at 7;00 and hope that someone else isn't a millisecond faster than you. Tom explained it great.. "It's like a game of WACKAMO". The catch is that if you pay BOATY BALL an extra $750 for the week then you can reserve your ball before the 7am. Which means that if you have a charter boat with a bunch of people that just paid somewhere between $20K to $30K for week, and you've only got a week to 10 days to enjoy this trip of a lifetime, you're definately going to plunk down a few extra dollars to guarentee you can be where you want next.  There is a high turn over in the BVI's everyday. We opted to go for the White First Come First Serve mooring balls. These balls were only $40 per day, and it was a lot less stressfull to just show up. There were usually plenty of these available.

One the way to Little Harbor from Brewer's Bay. We had to go through this narrow cut between Soper's Hole Marina and Little Thatch Caye.  There are tons of boats going in and coming out of Soper's Hole Marina. It's very busy with charter boats coming and going. We had a gaunlet of boats to weave through. There is plenty of room if you're paying attention.

We had one charter boat that was coming from behind and overtaking us with speed. Maritime laws says that the over taking boat had to give rights to the slower boat. He apparently was in a hurry, so instead of taking our stern and crossing our stern, he decided to put on the gas and barely make it crossing our bow. Since a boat over taking (the charter boat) has to give the rights to the boat in front (us) he was breaking maritime law. I finally got fed up and took a video of him over taking us.

He must have known he was doing something wrong, becuase he came out of the helm and started to raise his hands in a defensivle mode. Since we weren't in a rush, we let him go by.

Thank goodness we're not in a rush to have FUN every moment. We can actually relax and enjoy our lives.
